My roommate and I were
driving on the interstate in Mobile, AL late one night. I was
driving about 80 when this car zips around us like we were going
the other way. A couple of seconds later motion caught my eye
and I looked up just in time to see the car veer sharply to the
right across 2 thankfully empty lanes. The car struck one of the
metal lamp posts which started the car spining like a top and
didn't stop until it hit the bank on the other side of a drainage
ditch. As if that weren't enough, the pole fell over into the
road and I barely swerved enough to miss gitting hit. My bud and
I were shaken up pretty badly as you can imagine; aside from almost
wrecking ourselves all we could think about was that the people
in that car were probably dead. Instead of turning around, which
would have been almost impossible, we decided to go up to the
next exit and call an ambulance. After doing that we went back
to the wreck to see if we could do anything. We immediately said
!
a prayer for the people in the wrecked car then, to calm our nerves,
I wanted to put on some music. I had just gotten Machine Fish
and Fear Not popped into my head. Just being able to focus on
something was a big help, but the words of the song gave us assurance.
We never figured out what caused the wreck (probably either drunk
driving or falling asleep at the wheel) but the occupant of the
vehicle walked to the ambulance on her own two feet. That shouldn't
have been possible considering the severity of the wreck. Now
every time I hear Fear Not I think of the prayer we said and the
woman that walked away virtually unharmed. I can't honestly say
if she would have died if we hadn't prayed, but having seen the
power of prayer many times before I don't believe we wasted our
words.
